The Duke of Burl – 1940 Chevy Coupe
Inside the original style bench seat remains, recovered in black naugahyde. The door panels, floor boards and headliner have all been refinished in black as well. While the black adds great contrast against the copper paint, third degree burns are possible after sitting too long under the Texas sun.
A set of chrome reverse O.E’s with paint-matched centers wear wide whites tucked nicely into the fender walls exposing just enough white wall to give the expression each one is smiling back at you… Does it know you’re staring?
Future plans for the coupe? Well Burl is contemplating a chop to the stock roofline. Talk of this act has been met with mixed reviews so leave some feedback with your thoughts.
On the day of the shoot we cruised up and down a small strip of beach homes hoping to find a spot not too crowded but with enough background imagery and light to do the coupe justice. When shooting with natural light, as photographer Trent Sherrill prefers, timing is everything. But… every so often the car gods smile down on you and deliver warm sun, a secluded pier, and just enough cloud cover to give you the right amount of light. Throw in photo shoot essentials: Former Houston Texans cheerleader Randi Brady, a vintage bathing suit, one the slickest customs in all of Texas, a few cold ones, and well… you’ll find yourself looking for the “pause” button.

Burl – dont chop it!
I say no chop too. You’re right on the money now!
Don’t change a thing this car is as hot as a Texas firey sunset. One of my top favorites. Don’t chop it, I’m a tall gal and that won’t work for me, I like to strech out like a cat in the sun sometimes.
Truly look at this beauty (yes I was referring to the car), in the black and white photo it shows it off well. I would like to get a car like this. Just enjoy it!
Don’t Chop, leave it!
Nice eye candy with the car too.
Please don’t chop it, it looks great,, let someone else chop theirs…
Great article and fabulous photos!
Cool article brotha, chop that top, it will complete your car and you can move on to the wagon!
Just for the record Alex Gambino did build my 1940 Chevy. And burly bought the car from me and not Alex . The complete build was built from my style and ideas from my fathers first high school car (running gear and color) me and my father have built many cars over the last 20 years and you can get true build of my 40 Chevy on the HAMB (Jalopy Journal name is Burl) thanks John
Never misrepresented who I bought the car from . I think people just associate the car as the Gambino chevy coupe. Chop comming soon. Thanks Big Burl. Los CoChinos.
Hate to hear of the chop, and I AM not one to NOT CHOP /OR SECTION SOMETHING,,,,.. Its JUST TOO REFRESHING TO SEE ONE THIS NICE…..I MUST BE GETTING OLD…..
I hope you didn’t chop that imaculate car. Sell it to me. There are enough junkers left to butcher. Leave that one alone!!!
I don’t believe it’s channeled. It has a Gambino super notch that let’s it lay the running boards on the ground. Super cool car. I am thinking of building a 40 chevy coupe now….
