Couresty of Ford Media and PCGCambell Two years ago this month, the drag racing community lost John Force Racing Mustang driver Eric Medlen in a tragic Funny Car testing accident. In the aftermath of that accident, John Force Racing and Ford Racing banded together to form The Eric Medlen Project, with an eye on finding and improving safety innovations for the sport. Along with the NHRA, John Force Racing and Ford Racing have instituted a series of safety measures ranging from significant Funny Car chassis modifications to the instillation of the Ford Blue Box (crash data recorder) on all nitro cars. This important work continues and This Week In Ford Racing recently caught up with 14 time Funny Car World Champion John Force and with Pat DiMarco, Ford Racing Vehicle Dynamics and Electronics Supervisor, for an update on The Eric Medlen Project and ongoing safety developments. JOHN FORCE – GTX Castrol Mustang-- CAN YOU GIVE US AN UPDATE ON THE ERIC MEDLEN PROJECT? “Our shop is out here in California, 50,000 square foot, but most of the race teams are out in Indy, the Ford Motor program is in...

Bonnie’s Inteior Update – 27 Ford Rat Rod?
posted by pikesan
It's about time I update everyone on the interior upholster on my 27 Ford Roadster. Now that the interior is done, is it a rat rod? I didn't really think it was before, but who really cares. Now it's got car carpet, a full seat and even sound insulation! The interior was done by Todd over at "The interior Shop" in Phoenix. Todd was challenged by the inside of the modified roadster because there isn't really much to secure the interior to and there's also some funny compound curves. In the end, I think it came out great! It looks like leather, but it's not. It's a distressed looking vinyl that's perfect. When I put paint on, it's gonna be cool and not your every day blood red. Below are the rest of the shots. Thanks to everyone that voted for "option B" as drawn by Jimmy Smith from Jimmyshotroddesign.com. Here's the link to that story if you missed it: 27 Roadster Interior you chose...
Hot Rod Art Book by Designer Dwayne Vance
posted by pikesan
The Hot Rod Art book: Masters of chicken scratch is a book of 13 highly respected and talented artists from the industry. While I am fairly new to the art and design scene in the Hot Rod world, I know many people in the industry from my years working as a designer for Hot Wheels. (Dwayne designed one of my favorite hot wheels) I now have my own design company and still do design work for Hot Wheels as well as several other companies. I design things from snowmobiles to concepts for video games. I started doing Hot Rod art about a year and a half ago and it only fueled my passion for the automobile. My fascination with cars began at a very early age. I grew up around cars and rebuilt my first muscle car at the age of 16 with my dad. I attended the Art Center College of design and received my degree in transportation design. My professional design career started with Troy Lee Designs in Corona, California, as a designer of high-end motocross protective gear. I then became a senior designer for Mattel, Hot...
3 Steps to Personalizing your Hot Rod
posted by pikesan
I've always liked my car... Good thing, right? I guess I always wanted a hot rod. Bonnie, as in Bonneville, sure has changed since I bought her at a Goodguys show. The 3 pictures shown here are the 3 evolutionary changes of the car. Step 1: As I bought her: I was thinking of buying a Zipper bodied Lakes Modified until I found out there's a 6 month wait to get one. I felt pretty lucky to grab this when I did. You'll see the long split wishbones hooked to a 3 inch dropped axle. The rear axle is a old school banjo. The wheels are the 1935 style wires with some hard as hell bias ply or tractor style tires. I'm not sure what kind of paint the original owner used, but that yellow is tough as NAILS!! The engine block hasn't never changed, but it did get updated. I've got the original header on it too. The quarter elliptical spring suspension front and back is there, but there's friction shocks (only better then nothing at all!) in the front and nothing in the rear. Step 2: My...
NHRA safety update for Top Fuel Cars
posted by pikesan
Over at the NHRA.com site, one of my favorites, I read that the NHRA Technical Services is making all Top Fuel cars run what they're calling the "Electrimotion Safety Shutoff Controller". This new rule will be in effect for the 2009 NHRA Drag Race season. The Electrimotion Safety Shutoff Controller was designed by Dave Leahy of Electrimotion of Delaware, Ohio. Electrimotion.com has a very detailed explanation of what the box does detailed on his website in Adobe pdf form. Download the info here: Drag Race Safety Device info. The basics are that the device will: Sense manifold burst panel failure Activates the fuel shutoff, Shuts off ignition, and Deploys parachutes Pretty cool, but am I the only one that's thinking, "Its about time!" I almost can't watch drag racing since the death of Eric Medlen. I never knew him, but he seemed like a nice guy and as part of the Force Racing team, I always routed for him. Then John Force got seriously hurt and next Scott Kalitta died. I don't know all the facts, but shortening the track wouldn't have saved Scott. Shutting off the fuel and...
Speed to drive for best Fuel Economy
posted by pikesan
I was cruising the web looking for something and I found this discussion. What speed should you drive to get your best fuel economy? interestingly enough, the discussion was from a story from the site Truth about Cars. That site kicks out a shocking amount of car related content. From the story folks at truthaboutcars.com were trying to help everyone understand a formula that actually came from Howstuffworks.com, another great site to kill several hours... try taking the Alligator quiz or see if a platypus could poison you. The How Stuff works guys did alot better job, but didn't really give any background. After the story, several folks chimed in with their "truth". In reality, they said alot that was dead wrong and then some close, but not right. The equation they were using to answer the question was: Road Load Power = aV + bV^2 + cV^3 where a, b and c are constants and V is the symbol for velocity or let's just say SPEED. There was some mention of where this equation came from, but unfortunately, it wasn't quite right. I also want to say what...

Customer service pays off. Or should I say, bad customer service doesn't pay. If you haven't seen my 1927 Ford Roadster called "Bonnie" then this may be your first time to MyRideisMe.com. In that case, WELCOME! Please stay a while and if you dig it... JOIN here. My roadster kinda odd because I run a 2.3L Ford Motor. That's right! It's a Pinto motor and I'm proud to be part of the 4 banger world. The 2.3's are easy to find, cheap to get and can be made to run hard, but that can get expensive. I wrote a bunch about modifying the 2.3L Ford Motor in my garage blog. Check it out. So trying to save a few bucks, I bought a Mallory dual point distributer. Why a dual point with all the electronic points systems out there? And why not just run a factory Ford electronic distributor? Good questions. For both cases, you often have to deal with a vacuum advance system. My motor makes poopoo vacuum. (does that rhyme?) and those vacuum modulators don't look good. Also, most of the electronic setups are big bucks. Dual...
Artistic Photo Effect Applied to Hot Rods
posted by Alan57
A person seeing my photography for the first time usually pauses for a moment, gazing, trying to understand just what it is they are looking at. I start to smile, knowing what is coming next. I say, “No…It’s a photograph”. The reply is almost always, “Really, I thought this had been airbrushed or something.” The beauty of a well-designed automobile, truck, or, motorcycle inspires me to photograph them. I have a true appreciation for all the time and effort needed to bring a vehicle to a prime conditioned state. I see photography as a means of permanently recording that beauty. When I first began searching the internet for a more artistic type of photography, I came across a series of photographs from Trey Ratcliff at the website: www.flickr.com/photos/stuckincustoms. Trey produces amazing photographs with HDR, a computer generated enhancement tool. To fully understand all the nuances of HDR, check out the website, www.HDR.com. The HDR technique I use blends several photos together bringing to life the color and texture that is seen, but not recorded by a single photograph. Every reflection, color, and shadow is enhanced to a degree that...
240Z Street Racer Oil Cooler Install
posted by BlueovalZ
When I had the 289 CID motor in this car, engine oil temperature was not a problem and at times it ran cool. The installation of the 383 (stroked 351W) changed all of that. Any extended driving or repeated hard acceleration would push the engine oil temperature up to 240º, and sometimes to the end of the gauge at 250º. Water temperature appeared to be stable, and no more than a couple of degrees warmer than with the smaller motor, so it appeared I had to remedy an oil temperature problem. Some of the options for mounting the cooler were: 1) In front of, or behind the radiator which created problems directing the oil supply hoses to and from the cooler. The design of the car has the engine radiator sealed by body/hood panels to ensure forward motion air pressure is forced through the radiator with minimal losses around it. Attaching the oil cooler to the radiator would require cut or modified body panels, extended lengths of hose, and the general dissatisfaction of having a cooler attached to the radiator through the fins using the typical plastic fasteners. The...
Falcon Build Update #4 Tailgate Drama
posted by pikesan
Ford Falcon Wagon Tailgate I should have called this "The Good, The Bad and the Ugly" as I update everyone on the MyRideisMe.com 1963 Falcon Wagon build. It no doubt I drastically underestimated the work needed to get ready for paint! Also, my plan for the Falcon changed from a quick paint job to, "I might as well do it right" which of course is the right way to go. I've made some good progress on the body work even though Arizona's held 100-plus degrees making it damn hot in the garage. It'll be another 20 days before it cools down, so waiting's not an option. Damn! I'm writing about the weather! Want the good, the bad or the ugly? OK, bad first. Remember the blog when I showed off my skills filling the back-up lights in the tailgate. Please disregard everything I said! I screwed up that tailgate beyond reasonable repair, at least for me. Luckily, I have Mr. Freeze, (my buddy Rob) backing me up with another tailgate on hand (and rust free!). The original tailgate was repaired (another big pile of manure the...
World Class T-5 Transmission Upgrade
posted by BlueovalZ
Once I decided to upgrade the World Class T-5 transmission, I investigated the companies that provide the gears, and chose G-Force, which resulted in a very pleasurable experience. They were more than willing to work me on information exchange as well as ensuring that I was happy with their product (enough of the promotion). Background first. The original WC T-5 worked flawlessly behind the 289. 289 was not a torque monster, but it was a 390 HP motor. The new 383 (stroked 351W) will provide a lot more torque, and I did NOT want to disassemble this car again (for a transmission failure) simply for a shortcut in not upgrading the transmission. Therefore, I needed to either go with a new TKO, a T-56, or an upgraded T-5. Option 1: The T-56 would have added another 50 lbs to the weight of the car (which I try to avoid this kind of situation like the plague), plus the needed changes to the transmission tunnel, bellhousing, and anything else I was not seeing. The torque rating on this transmission is better than the T-5, but not as good as the...
