We finally got to meet and I snapped a few pictures myself. I'm aspiring to take pictures as well as Nick and Swanee, so I keep practicing. Sometimes the light and shadows (and stars) align to get something decent. If I grabbed a pic of your car, please let me know, I'll email it to you. Some folks made it easy with show cards. One of those is this 1963 Galaxie race car called the "Moonshine Hauler". Currently owned by Mark Brothers out of Saratoga Springs, UT, the 1964 NHRA record holder now sports a "worked" center oiler 427 with twin 700 Holly carbs, a T-10 4 speed and a 4.11 locker. Words and Pictures by Nick K Welcome to the 2010 NorCal Knockout Korena Goldstien and Henrik Forss aka "Hollywood Hank" are no new comers to the hot and custom car scene by any stretch of the imagination. Henrik grew up in Sweden and moved to the US some 10 years ago. Since the early 90's Hank's promoted both music and car events in Sweden as well as here in the US. They say distance makes the heart grow fonder. Since Stude's spent the past 3 months suntanning her metal in the Mojave sun outside Gene Winfield's shop...I've grown fonder then ever. The great news is (drum-roll please,) she's back on the road!!! Not only is she back, she's running better than ever! Replacing the transmission was the biggest job that needed to be done. Saving money and finding the right transmission is what took the bulk of the time. Luckily I had good friends and lots of help through the process...thanks to all who were involved! I ended up having a great guy, Rick Annis in Phoenix, AZ, rebuild a 700R4 for me. Then my car club pal, Lori, and I took the 700R4 up to Mojave to meet Stude. Up at Gene's we got a lot of help from Bart putting it in. With Bart having a lot of experience in engine tuning he wouldn't let my car out of his sight with just a new transmission - so we worked on getting Stude's little 383 small block up to par also. James is a custom car guy, and has been for years. Before the Lincoln, he owned an ’86 Prelude, ’88 Toyota truck, and a ’95 Accord wagon. That wagon was beyond amazing, featuring lots of chrome, lots of painted accessories, and it was way beyond its time. After he sold the Accord, he laid back for a bit and focused on his job as a Honda Technician. Then he stumbled upon his dream ride, a 1966 Lincoln Continental. His parents had bought one brand new and sold it in the 1980’s for way less than it was worth, and ever since then he knew he had to have one. After he found the ’66 for $4k, he snatched it up and got to work. The car was in excellent running condition, so that really wasn’t a problem. The real issue was that he wanted to get it painted and done up in a fairly short amount of time. Enter Adam Hartley, a custom car builder and good friend of James. Custom Truck: Nissan Frontier Sometimes you’ve got to go against the grain. Take Clint McDowell, for example. If you saw the 20 year old on the streets of Phoenix, you’d wonder how one person could get so many piercings in their face, and how they were able to dig up a set of Max Headroom style glasses out of the 1985 parts bin. To say Clint is unique is an understatement in its highest form. Seriously on his tech sheet under “other interests” he put: “Hockey and Monkeys.” It’s probably no surprise then to know that this bright pink Frontier used to be a Desert Runner. Yes, Nissan’s factory pre-runner truck was in Clint’s driveway just a few years ago, really high off the ground with a funky blue color. It was neat for a while, but seriously, Clint doesn’t go for what regular people do. He couldn’t leave the truck stock, that’d be too… normal. He wanted to reduce the daylight underneath the truck, and knew it wasn’t going to be an easy task. After searching far and wide, he came across Kevin Blysdale from Just Plain Trick...

Learning How-to Set A Gap In Spark Plugs

I've known for awhile that I needed to change the spark plugs in my Studebaker. But I'd heard things. Things like you could break the plug inside your motor if you did it wrong and to be sure to tighten the plugs to the correct tension. So although I knew they should be changed, I was scared to do it on my own, and my spark plugs in there were working...right??? As I'm learning, I'm seeing that spark plugs (although they don't cost much and are small little things) are a major, MAJOR component of your engine. Without 'em, your engine wouldn't run. Without 'em working at their best, your engine won't run at its best. So as part of last weekend's wrenching adventure up at Gene Winfield's in Mojave, I changed my spark plugs...for the very first time! Gasp! The fellow at the local parts store recommended Autolite over ACDelco plugs which I had been running (What do you think? Leave a comment below!) I was surprised, and a little confused, when he informed me the gap for my application was .052. What?!? While perhaps some people just throw...
Bucket List Avanti Hits El Mirage

We first told you about this Studebaker Avanti and its Land Speed Racing legend status in the Land Speed Racing Avanti intro. We have a quick update for you. Dan and crew took the #88 Avanti and its borrowed twin supercharged Studebaker V8 to El Mirage for some runs down the dry lakebed at El Mirage. It was 191 days in the making and it was well worth it. The Stude looks right at home on the dry, cracked lake bed. Dan suited up and was able to make 2 runs, well, 1.5 runs. Before actually getting down the dirt track, it took many hours and helpful hands to get the Avanti to pass tech inspection. Most of the little things are safety related, like sealing off the interior from fire hazards and the correct protection. Avanti Dan suiting up. No racing happens without help of family and friends. 1960 Starliner Part 2 – It’s Custom and Evil

If you've read MyRideisMe.com long, you know we don't do many stockers, but the unrestored and original 1960 Starliner from part 1 was special. Contrast that with the billet-wheeled'n candy painted sweetheart you see here. Or is it? I met Mel and Lynda Swafford at the NorCal Knockout in Vallejo, CA. From the pics you can see it was a cool show nestled in the trees of the Solano County Fairgrounds. As the first annual, it wasn't that big, but everyone who showed enjoyed a perfect California July day. (Look for Nick K and my pics soon...) Back to this "sweetheart" known to the Swafford's and their friends as, "Christine". Oh you remember! Stephen King's 1958 Plymouth Fury that didn't mind running folks off the road... Heatin’ Up at Mooneyes Summer Show

Today the sun was shining and the heat was on at Irwindale Speedway for Mooneyes Summer Show and Drag 2010! I really like this show because its got variety. Sunday's show not only had a good turnout of cars but there was also drag racing! While its always cool to see to see any cars drag race, I only wish that more of the "normal" cars would've rumbled their way to the 1/8 mile dragstrip. Wouldn't it have been great if these two works of art sacrificed some rubber on the track!?! The heat got turned up a little more when pinups Shelby Loveland and Lisa Luxe rolled on the scene. (Shelby's been known to turn a wrench or two also!) All that heat was cooled off by this sleek custom convertible. Smokin' hot or ice cold, Mooneyes Summer Show 2010 was a good time. Plenty of cars and friends to go around. Speakin' of going around...my personal favorite part of the day was having to park out in the middle of the race track. 1960 Starliner Part 1 – Low Mile Stocker

When you're cruzin' the LA Roadster show, you never know what you'll find. Roadsters, yea, but like I've said before, the LA Roadsters brings out the best in all of SoCal. Here's one of the best you'll see anywhere from Rod Barrett of Rancho Dominguez, CA. This original and unrestored 1960 Galaxie Starliner has a little over 10,000 miles on the odo. This is part 1 of 2 Ford Starliners found this summer, but maybe there was a part ZERO? KIRK! from Billetproof and now Goodguys Gazette fame has (had, he sold it now) one of the finest 60 Starliners ever built. If you've never seen it, check it out in Kirk's garage here. So much has been written about Kirk's ride, I'm skipping to this bad black beauty. One thing 60 Starliner folks are happy to tell you is that they own the longest and widest Ford ever built. At 5.7 inches longer and five inches wider than the 1959 Ford, they're still shorties compared to the 1959-60 Caddy coming in at 213.7 inches compared to the Cad's 225. A Touch of Class – Rick Dore’s Hot Rod Lincoln Pickup

There are a lot of famous street rod builders out there. Guys like Chip Foose get a lot of the press, but out of one quiet shop in the corner of Phoenix, Arizona, Rick Dore has been building some of the cleanest rides in the country. It’s not like his name is unheard of. Rick is in 6 hall of fames, has won tons of awards at the prestigious Oakland Rod & Custom show, and has even been on TV a few times. The man is huge in the hot rod world, having built dozens of immaculate vehicles over the years, even before he opened his shop. For the past 10 years he’s been building head-turning rods, customs and trucks. For 9 months out of the year, Rick and his crew of customizers are building customs for customers. High profile people such as rock stars, athletes and others come to him when they require that one-off look. And then, for a three-month span, the shop shuts down to regular customers and becomes a factory for SEMA cars and trucks. Rick does a lot of image work for major manufacturers...
