Custom 1959 Cadillac Photos by Paul "Swanee" Swanson I think I just coined a new term for cars: Custom Restoration. Why? I guess we could just say "custom" because this 59's been customized front to back. On the other hand, the builder's shop, Xtreme Restorations out of Rhode Island, suggests his specialty is "restoration". So somewhere between full custom, resto-mod and restoration, I introduce to you: Custom Restoration. What better start than a 1959 Cadillac!? Standing back, trying to take in the 225.0 in (5715 mm) length that is 1959 Cadillac, the first nod to "restoration" over pure customization has to go to the color choice. Not a factory color, but also not the typical red or black; PPG supplied a Soft Yellow and Vanilla Shake to gracefully compliment the flowing lines of the Cad. Are you a "do-it-yourselfer" (DIY) hot rodder? Do you wrench on your own cars? Well, this is a DIY'er to the max. I came across pictures of Jared Drinkwater's Mitsubishi Evolution on NASIOC.com, a Subaru enthusiasts forum of all places. I'm a huge fan of the Mitsubish Evo for sure, but I was blown away at Jared's engineering and build skills. Jared is like the ultimate do-it-yourselfer. He is a Mechanical Engineer by day, by night he engineers parts for his Evo, which he races on road courses. Jared makes his own aero parts, race seat rails, fire extinguisher mounts, rebuilt his own engine (with a stroker kit and bigger turbo) and more. Dig these pics of his ride and Binary Eng parts you can buy for your own Evo. Jared's "Binary Engineering" Mitsubishi Evolution in his new race livery. Sonny and Cher “Half-Breed” Mustangs

In 1964 Ford launched an icon: Mustang. Riding two years of blistering sales, marketing dollars funded a project to put rising stars Sonny and Cher behind the wheel of brand new, nearly consecutive serial number, 1966 Mustang Convertibles. To match the sporty but mainstream Mustangs to the flamboyant rockers, George Barris and Barris TV and Movie Cars were hired to customize the pony car. A great Train of Thought, or so it would seem... Ford, their red-hot Mustang, George and a few Barris Kustom tricks should have been a Good Combination. Sold as a pair, they fetched over $150,000 (including fees, maybe a win?) at the 2010 Barrett Jackson Auction with George Barris himself on the block to add his, "I Got You Babe" to the auctioneers urging that when it comes to these two collectible cars, Its the Little Things that make'm bring big bucks. The best 1964 Ford Fairlane? 1964 Fairlanes will always be one of my favorites. At one time, Pops owned a Blue one, Mom's was white and mine was my high school driver called, "The Highway Bitch". Red, white and blue, we loved our 64's. Pops still has his and is done up Pro-street with a small block Ford and big-fatties in the back. The C6 went south so it's been sitting for a while, but here's a pic so you know what a "regular" 1964 Fairlane looks like. Here's another "regular" 1964 Fairlane at Bonneville Speed Week The not-so-casual viewer will notice this is a 2 door post model just like the factory race cars Ford built known as the "Thunderbolt". I've seen Pops work his butt off on this car and we've had alot of fun times in it. Hot Rod Roadster from the Grand National Roadster Show When you compete for the biggest roadster prize there is, America's Most Beautiful Roadster (the AMBR as it's called) you've already won. When you're the second woman in the Grand National Roadster Show's 60 year history to compete, there's got to be a story brewing for MyRideisMe.com. I first noticed Kim Vranas' 1927 Ford Touring Roadster resting quietly, not 30 feet away from the eventual AMBR winner named "Hot Rod Special" built at Willet Specials. Owning a 1927 roadster myself, that is in fact a cut version of the very same Model T touring body Kim chose. Trouble is, two people barely fit in my "lakes style" modified roadster. That's why, this uncut touring was easily one of my favorites at the show. It could be a "Family Hot Rod"! Following the GNRS, the roadster took a short ride into Los Angeles to accept an invitation of the Peterson Automotive Museum. Cruising any car show with buddies, there's always one car that even weeks later, you're still talking about it: "Remember that one car?" and you all do. That happened cruising the Scottsdale Goodguys show in November and I never forgot, even though Otis Schmidt, the owner of this bad hot rod may have thought I did! Otis, a hot rod, custom car and racing fan since he started building model cars at 12 years old, is now living in Moore, Oklahoma. He bought his 1929 Ford Sedan from Mark Riojas of Bridge Creek, Oklahoma after finding it parked right next to him at an NSRA show in Oklahoma City. Otis immediately dug the car cause it reminded him of a similar-styled 1934 Ford Sedan he'd recently, and regrettably sold . Between missing his 34 and the gold teaser parked right next to him, Otis contacted Mark soon after the show and a deal was struck on the phone. The first thing you notice about Otis's 1929 Sedan, called the "Corrugated Flyer" is the wild gold/copper color. The color's officially Gold Acrylic enamel. Have you ever gone through your closet to find some clothes that make you say, DAMN! I never wore that, did I? I think the same is true for cars, especially custom cars that were built in the 80's. At some point, did the designers take a step back and go, "Really? Is that cool?" I wonder cause this is an example of just about everything that's wrong with 80's custom paint. The only redeeming quality about this car is the LT5 tucked under the hood. As a 1988 Camaro, this is a combo that never was and that's probably why with this car, like every other car offered by GM, they read a long a boring disclaimer stating that basically that as far as GM is concerned, these cars don't exist. So if you can, look past the glowing neon yellow wheels and matching neon yellow seating surface and dig that sliding seal fading to upside down shoe graphics done in, you guessed it, neon yellow and *gulp* purple. Adios 80's! What do you think? Please leave a comment below! Look for many more and much less nauseating...
66 Super Sport Gasser in Pink (yea, pink!)

Hot Rod Chevy Gasser It takes all kinds, we know that, but you gotta like the gasser style from the 60's. Straight axle jacked up in the front with a slight lift in the back too. It's an attitude. It says, "I'm fast and I was built to run." So stumbling along at the Goodguys Southwest Nationals in Scottsdale, enjoying the sun and the 3000+ cars, I found one that stopped me in my tracks. It's a gasser alright, but it was pink. Pink! Not that goofy Mary K pink or some faded, pale pretty in pink, this was HOT pink and it was glowing in the Arizona sun. People walking by kept turning their heads sideways. Delirium? I gotta get a story about this car. Questions poured out when I finally had a chance to meet Bob Starks of Weatherford, TX. Twin Huffers on a sick Model T

Ron Ginn from Albuquerque, New Mexico ain't playin' when it comes to building ridiculous horsepower Model T's. I asked Ron, "Why two blowers?" and he kindly expanded on the theorem: "Injection is nice... but blown once is twice as nice!" I take that to mean, why the hell not? Like so many folks at the 2008 Goodguys Southwest Nationals in Scottsdale, AZ, you're gawking at 572 cubic inches of Chevy power in this highly detailed Model T. I won't call it a "Ford" because from looking at Ron's garage here at MyRideisMe.com, I think Ron's more of a Chevy guy. Twin Blown Stepping back, the ride Ron calls, "Nas T Too" was a 4 year build with everything but the paint and interior done by Ron in his home shop. That includes milling or turning several custom pieces on the car. Ron said that "dipping" into the hot rod fund to buy a mill and lathe was essential. When Kevin Nichols sets up to build his first street car (he's been primarily a drag racer) he doesn't mess around! I ran into Kevin a few weeks ago at the 83rd Ave. show up in Peoria. This car's under construction, but there's still a ton to see. Plus, sometimes cars that aren't quite finished yet tell a better story than a finished car. The first thing that jumps out of this bad Stude is the engine. How's 510 cubic inches for ya? If it was only a blown Chevy big block, that'd be cool, but this engine's from Kevin's Super Eliminator and Advanced E.T. At NHRA events it ran 6.70's! A sub 7 second E.T. digger that's been his passion for years suddenly lost sponsorship and went down the road. The engine's electronic fuel injection will push pump gas through the 8-71 blower and it'll have power steering, and A/C! This will be a driver. Like most projects, the timeline for the Stude's slightly blown. Alright, it's been thrown out the window! 3 years into the build Kevin's proud to say he's done almost all the work himself....

Custom 1965 Dodge D200 Truck at Goodguys This blog is well over due, but oh well. I need help writing these things, so if you're a struggling writer or just a car/bike freak with some extra time, why not give this a try? So here's Mike and Luz Wilson's 1965 Dodge D200. I met Mike at the Scottsdale Goodguys show when the sun was setting. I caught a couple good photos that I wanted to share. This truck is ultra clean and straight as an arrow and these pictures show it. Who's ever even seen one of these? Mike told me that the military and forest service were the ones buying up these trucks for a tough life, so the haven't survived well. Mike worked at Norman King Dodge back in '65 and since his pops needed a truck, the deal was made. I could have been Mike's plan all along to get the truck, but he had to wait 30 years before his dad was ready to let it go. Where do I start? Gregg’s cord of woody wagons, Dale’s nostalgia RPU or their dad Terry’s custom gauge panels? When you meet a family as nice as the Seaholm’s out of Tucson, AZ, their story needs to be told. Stories like this define My Ride is Me. My dad and I have been going to shows and swaps forever, so I know what it’s like to be there with family. For kindling, here’s Gregg’s other woody… (click on any picture to make it bigger!) I didn’t grab too many details on this one, but as you can see it’s got perfectly restored wood, a killer stance and Radir wheels with wide white walls. I dig the picture I got where it’s behind Gregg’s prize. This woody is one of my favorite rides from the entire show. Dug out of a garage in Pasadena, CA, stored since 1964 by the 2nd owner, dig this 1940 Ford Woody.
