Back in the Garage with the 1960 Ford Falcon

posted by GreaseGirl

As it ends up, Pikesan's not the only one with a Falcon project on their hands. I'm ashamed to say it - but Davey, my 1960 Ford Falcon 2-door sedan, has been sitting on a side-yard gathering dust since I finished Studie's transmission over a year ago. The above picture was taken at the last event, and come to think of it the only event, Davey ever attended - the Mooneyes 2010 Summer Show. I had been depending on the Falcon to get me by while Studie was stranded with transmission issues. Falcon got me through, but just barely. Falcon had been giving me worries and semi-breaking down for a couple of weeks by the time Stude had gotten back on the road. The above picture was taken in October 2010 before I had a garage and had to find crafty ways to comfortably work! I was so happy to have my Stude back, and busy with a million other things in life, that Davey just sat... and sat some more. I intended to bring the Falcon over to my garage months ago, but it never seemed to happen. The...

Speedweek Summary & Salt Flat Favorites

posted by GreaseGirl

Speed Week 2011 - Bonneville Salt Flats Summary Being out on the Bonneville Salt Flats for Speedweek is an amazing experience like none other. I always return with way too many pictures then I can post to the web and way too many thoughts than I can convey in my stories. So here it finally is - Grease Girl’s Speedweek Summary and Salt Flat Favorites for 2011! Record Breaking Summary This 63rd Speedweek saw 160 records broken - 93 for cars and 67 for bikes. 21 new members gained entry into the 200 MPH Club, 6 of those being the 300 MPH Chapter. Any of you less familiar with land speed racing may be surprised to find out the entire point of the sport is breaking a record! You aren’t racing against another opponent on the course or anything like that – you’re going in a straight line trying to go as fast as possible and break the record in the particular class racing in (The class takes into account engine size, fuel used, and the cars body design.) Favorite Experience Walking around the pits for someone who is...

Record Breaking Runs – Speedweek 2011

posted by GreaseGirl

Speed Week 2011 Results - Bonneville Salt Flats As Sunday was ending out on the Bonneville Salt Flats, lurking black clouds were rolling in and lightening was breaking all around. People were packing up their pit areas very well and getting off the salt. Was there going to be a storm? Would it halt Speedweek 2011?!? There was a storm! The rain poured down not long after the racing area closed up at 7pm. Luckily though, it didn't continue for long. Early the next morning as we drove out at the crack of dawn to see what Monday held in store - this is what we found. Out at the starting line however, the salt appeared like it might be all right. Cars and crews were lined up for record-confirming runs. (Not sure what it takes to set a record at Speedweek? Read more about it by clicking here!) Everyone waited around while officials made sure everything was in order for the fast times of land speed racing. After awhile a number of the crews were lead for a drive down the track to check out conditions for themselves....

Day 2 – Speedweek 2011 at Bonneville Salt Flats

posted by GreaseGirl

Speed Week 2011 Results - Bonneville Salt Flats Out at Bonneville Salt Flats there's been racing all weekend as Speed Week 2011 is well underway. The days are flying by during Speed Week 2011 as land speed racers race all types of vehicles down the Bonneville Salt Flats. Streamliners make up some of the wildest (but fastest) record breakers of the bunch. Cars that have more of a stock body (or modified like this one) are common as well. This 1953 Studebaker is one of my favorites - but then again I'm a little partial since I drive a Studebaker myself. Seeing these cars is one thing - hearing them is another. In case you've never experienced Bonneville Speedweek for yourself, check out this video. It gives you a sample of starting line take-offs - the Studebaker, a streamliner, and a motorcycle. One of my favorite kind of racers are belly tankers, like this one. This belly tanker is especially unique in that the driver is fully enclosed. The driver nearly lays down inside and looks down past their feet and out the clear part you see at...

Heating up at Speedweek 2011 – Bonneville Salt Flats

posted by GreaseGirl

Bonneville Salt Flats -Speedweek 2011 I wasn’t sure I’d be able to come to Bonneville this year. Studie didn’t get to come with me, but by 3pm Thursday afternoon my boyfriend Ethan and I were headed out of So Cal. By 9pm we were zooming across the empty desert underneath a full moon. By 3am we’d passed through Wendover and found an empty space at “The Bend”(the aptly named bend in the road just before getting to the Bonneville Salt Flats.) Early the next morning the sun woke us up to the sight of an amazing sunrise out over the salt flats – it was time for Speedweek 2011 to begin. Although the racing doesn’t begin until Saturday of Speedweek, Friday is full of activity as salt fever builds toward its breaking point…exploding as each participant racer zooms away from the starting line. Here’s some of the things I found going on in the pits as I wandered around on Friday… As racers arrive they register and begin lining up cars to get through tech inspection. This year has seen a number of safety changes – from head restraint...

1964 Pontiac GTO Heats Up the Drag Strip

posted by GreaseGirl

Heartbreaker 1964 Pontiac GTO Drag Racer While at Toyota's Irwindale Speedway recently for Amateur Drag night, I came upon this beautiful 1964 Pontiac GTO. Although running in the professional class, this car is built from scratch by its owner, Dennis Jewell. With brand new paint job, this 64' Pontiac is breaking more hearts then ever. But the good part is, there's plenty of substance behind the polish. This GTO is powered by a 604 cid motor pushing out 1100 HP at 7,500 rpm! Aspirated with two 1050 Dominators, it's fastest run has been the 1/4 mile in 8.3 seconds @ 163 mph. I love this cool exhaust exit at the front fender.... and good looking hold-down for its Optima Yellow Top battery in the trunk. Even more, I love that Dennis has built this beauty himself - along with good friend Jimmy Branham's support. For more info, contact: Dennis Jewell (818)...

Speed Fever Continues at the Drag Races

posted by GreaseGirl

Toyota's Irwindale Speedway Heats up on Thursday Nights! Speed Fever is a serious thing. Once I caught on, it was only a matter of time before I got interested in drag racing. First I hot rodded my Studebaker. Then I began attending Speed Week each year. Eventually I learned to do a burnout. Why not drag race!? Although it's not time for my own Studebaker to get on the dragstrip just yet, I'm sure it's day will come. First I've got to learn a thing or two about drag racing - and what better way to go to do that than ride along with a pal who's been racing his 1955 Chevy Gasser for years!? When my buddy Stan first invited me to go along with him to the Irwindale Raceway, I didn't realize we were going to actually drive his racing gasser TO the races. But yep, he built this car to drive and there'll be no trailer for him. (Read more about his Chevy here.) Thursday nights at Irwindale is a run-what-ya-brung amateur night with some professional class racers around also. It isn't a nostaglic-class night, anyone...

Speed Seeking Studebakers #5 – The Rest of the Pack

posted by GreaseGirl

Bonneville Salt Flat Racing Vintage Studebakers Speed Week 2011 is quickly approaching! And you know what that means...Salt Fever! It's reminded me that I still have many Speed Seeking Studebakers to add to the series I started after last year's Speed Week. In fact, there's 11 more racing Studebakers I have to bring ya. Rounding out a total of 14 Studebaker racers on the Salt Flats I caught last year (and I'm sure I missed a few!) If you missed #1-4, begin here - All Speed Seeking Studebakers. To start with is this wicked 1953 Studebaker Coupe owned by Bob Drury and Old Stud Racing running in the A/cF ALT category with top speeds of 225 mph. Also a '53 is this more highly modified body, #974. With an extreme chop and a hood scoop to match the roof height it's an extreme looking Studebaker salt flats racer! In 2008 this Stude set the class record at 249.945 mph. Another highly modified and chopped coupe is this #749. They're not ALL '53 Coupes. There's always a good showing of Avanti's also..of course! Speaking of Avanti's, keep an eye out for...

3 Things to Know Before Insuring Your Classic Car

posted by GreaseGirl

What To Know Before Selecting Classic Car Insurance For a number of years, I spent thousands of dollars annually on Stated Value Coverage for my classic car, a hot-rodded 1955 Studebaker Champion. At the time, it was my only option because I didn’t qualify for Classic Car Insurance. After getting a car for daily use, I finally qualified for Classic Car Insurance which lowered my annual premium on my Studebaker from $1844/year to only $95/year through Condon Skelly Collector Car Insurance! Here's how I saved $793 with Classic Car Insurance. Want to save that kind of money too?! 3 Things to Know Before Changing Your Classic Car Insurance: I wish I had known a few things before I went through the process of getting car insurance – so I’m going to share them with you now! #1 What's needed to qualify for Classic Car Insurance? The most basic things, as stated on most Classic Car Insurers websites are: Must have another car insured as daily driver. Must have a secure place to park your classic car. (This doesn’t have to be your place of residence. Had I realized this, I...

Saved $793 Per Year with Classic Car Insurance

posted by GreaseGirl

Classic Car Insurance - Insure 2 Cars and Save! When it comes to insuring your classic car, there are a number of different auto insurance options available. During my adventures getting Classic Car Insurance with my 1955 Studebaker Champion, I’ve learned a lot by trial and error. Wanting your experience insuring your classic car to be smoother than mine, I thought I’d let ya know some of the discoveries I’ve made along my journey! When it comes to insuring your car, there are a few options: Standard Auto Policy This is what most vehicles carry. A standard auto policy  insures your car for its blue book value at the coverage limits of your choosing. It is the type of coverage that you would have for your everyday vehicles that you drive regularly. It is also an option for your classic if you're using it as your primary vehicle. Stated Value Car Insurance Not many car insurance companies offer this. Stated Value insures your car for what you claim its worth is, which should be verified by an appraiser. This figure is about what you would expect to pay for a...

How To Metal Flake Your Ride

posted by GreaseGirl

How To Metal Flake Your Car Just because I love grease, doesn't mean that I don't love sparkly things too! Before going to Viva Las Vegas this year, I wanted to add a little bling to my 1955 Studebaker Champion with a metal flake paint job. Studie and I have been through a lot together in the five years I’ve owned and drove her. I’ve become attuned to her original patina’d coral and white paint job. So originally the thought of changing her exterior in any way made me nervous. But the more I thought about adding a subtle sparkle to Studie’s white roof portion, the more I liked the idea. Not knowing the first thing about how to paint, I was lucky to have an expert nearby. Pati Fairchild is the newest member of my car club, the Gasoline Girls. She also happens to be a professional paint and body chick who teaches the subject at El Camino College. After polling friends on Facebook and looking through various paint samples, I paid a visit to Coast Airbrush in Anaheim for my final selection. I went in knowing I wanted...

It’s Fast! Custom Studebaker Coupe Fastback

posted by GreaseGirl

Custom 1953 Studebaker Coupe Altered Into A Fastback Studebaker folks are unfailingly interesting. So when I met John Saltsman at the 2011 Grand National Roadster Show this past January standing by his amazing Atomitron, a highly customized 1949 Studebaker pickup, I wasn't too surprised to hear that he had other Studebaker stories to share. However, when he produced the few pictures in existence of the 1953 Studebaker Coupe he modified as a teenager, I couldn't believe what I was seeing! The first unbelievable thing about this custom... It was built by John while he was still in high school! The year was 1970 and Fastback Mustang's were all the rage. He liked 'em, but couldn't afford one. What he lacked in cash he made up for with a wealth of car building knowledge in his family. Looking at the lines of the  '53 Coupe he figured it could be built into a fastback all his own. The main modification was creating the fastback. To do this, he took the trunk out of a 1949 Cadillac and covered the whole trunk section and back window with it, integrating it into...
