I wanted to continue my international hot rod theme of late and share some pictures sent to me by Ken Sakata of Trident Speed Shop from Nara Prefecture, Japan. We first introduced you to Trident Speed Shop in Tano's '26 T roadster feature a few weeks back. In an email from Ken, he told me that Trident has been in business for 10 years. He was proud to say that he does not advertise in any magazines becaues he gets his business from word of mouth. Tano tells me that he takes his '26 T Roadster to Ken in Nara, which is on the opposite side of Japan from Sapporo, because Trident is the only shop he trusts with his hot rod. This black and white photo above is rad! This is Ken's roadster built in traditional hot rod style. I love these aircraft style windscreen frames, they really give hot rods that 1940's traditional feel dont they? Ken says he loves the speed culture. Hot Rods are very important in his life and he especially respects hot rodders. Here is Ken lubing crank bearings during reassembly. Anyone know what kind of engine this is? ...
Throttle, The Original Hot Rod Magazine
posted by Hechtspeed
Throttle Magazine was the first known "hot rod" magazine, before it was even known as hot rodding. Throttle was almost 100% focused on southern California Lakes and Midget racing. It was only printed for 1 year, 1941, and included 12 issues. The bombing of Pearl Harbor turned the USA upside down and hot rodding all but dried up for 3-4 years along with the magazine. Throttle never came back after WWII ended. "Hot Rod Magazine" picked things back up in January 1948 with their first issue. Here's a quick look at Throttle through a Reprint book I purchased at The Rodders Journal website. Thom Taylor (check out Thom's website ThomTaylorDesigns.com), hot rod artist, was the person who spearheaded the effort to put together a quality reprint of all 12 issues. No small task considering relatively few copies were printed and the fact that they are almost 70 years old. That's Old School cool! Here's a glimpse from the Introduction by Thom Taylor of just what kind of effort was involved in this project: "Jack Peters, who created Throttle and was its editor and publisher, was an enigma. Finding out what happened to him was difficult but also...
Fresno Autorama: Kathy’s Comet and Friends
posted by Hechtspeed
We featured Kathy's 1961 Comet back in March. Kathy and the Comet were invited to the 2010 Fresno Autorama. You know, the Blackie Gejeian Car Show. It's only his 51st show. Only!? The Fresno Autorama is considered to be THE finest indoor car show in the States. Kathy hooked us up with Jerry Burt and his photos on JBurtPhotos.com. First, let's see a couple pictures of Kathy and her Comet, along with Blackie Gejeian. Check out Kathy's BIG smile. Friends and hot rods makes for some Good Times! Wow, what a cool experience to have your hot rod invited to the Fresno Autorama by Blackie Gejeian. Congrats Kathy and the Full Tilt crew. That deep purple paint on the Full Tilt built Comet is a sight to see! Just gaze into the purple hue under the lights at the Fresno Autorama. Heaven! ha ha In this photo by J Burt, the tan leather custom interior is poppin' real nice. The suicide doors help bring attention to the interior too. But, its hard not to notice the low down air ride and injected powerplant. Now, on to some of my favorite...
American Hot Rods and Customs in Germany
posted by Hechtspeed
The last post I did using Pascal Hein's photos was German cars in Germany. Today, I bring you American Hot Rods and Customs in Germany. It's an interesting idea to think of an American Muscle car or a traditional roadster as an "import" car. As we saw with Tano's '26 T Roadster from Japan, there are some very cool American rides all over the globe. Let's see what Germany has in store for us... Here's a great line up of 20-30's hot rods. I spy a sedan, a roadster, and a pickup. Looks like we're at a car show on main street USA right? Low ride height, white walls. This is a beautiful 40's (right?) cruiser. I'm not good with cars from the 40's. Anyone know what this is? Now, something from the 50's. A well used 4 door Chevy Bel Air hot rod project. A little rust here, a little primer there, mismatched doors. I love it. You know this car gets driven. Dig this mild custom Ford Edsel! Ya, Ford Edsel. You can't get any more American than this. ha ha As big of a failure as it was back in the day, the...
1 Hot Rod + 2 Countries = 3 New Friends
posted by Hechtspeed
Sapporo, Japan is NOT what people think of as a center for hot rodding car culture and they're right, its not. But, there is a cool dude from Japan who's a real hot rodder living the hot rod life. Kiyoshi Tanomura (aka Tano) and I became Facebook friends a couple weeks ago. I accepted Tano's request solely because of his Profile Picture. It was a picture of this 1926 Ford Model T roadster, built in the Traditional rod style. I saw his Japanese name with that American hot rod picture and said to myself, "I need to find out about this guy!" Just looking at the roadster, would you expect this to come out of Japan? As you can imagine, the hot rod parts came from the States. The build is a well thought out, period correct hot rod that few could achieve. Japanese car nuts are just the type to achieve such a build. Why? From what little I know about the Japanese culture is they have great respect for their ancestors and history, they are very detailed oriented, even passionate about the details and seem to be natural engineers. Tano mentions two friends from the USA...

2010 Viva Las Vegas First Look
posted by pikesan
We're HERE! After an uneventful drive through the Nevada desert we hit Vegas in the daytime. Not quite as exciting as the nighttime skyline, but who cares! We're here for the hot rods, customs and pinups that make Viva Las Vegas a must every year. Vote for your favorite here. Sunset's a great time to catch photos, even for a hack like me, but my man Swanee's doing his thing for this picture. Several beers later and with a dead cell phone and wireless that doesn't work, we're still getting these pictures and tons more up in the next few days. One of the best parts of the Viva Las Vegas is the pinups. The show's a gathering of all things hot rods, music and vintage clothes wearing girls with bright red lipstick, a flower in their hair and some great expressions on their faces! I'll try to catch this lovely lady's name at the show today. Update... didn't see her again on Saturday. Anyone know her name? Please leave a comment below. I hijacked what looked like a professional photographer shooting another lovely young lady in front of...
Hello Viva Las Vegas 2010!

Today's Day #1 of Viva Las Vegas - the yearly weekender when hepcats and hotrods invade sin city. Not wanting you to miss out on any of the action, here's a sneak peak! People from near and far are descending in droves. Even more will descend upon the massive car show hosted here yearly by the Shifters Car Club on Saturday. Last year saw some 500+ vehicles show up. I rolled out of bed in the wee hours this morning to meet up with the Throttle Kings for the ride over. Los Angeles to Las Vegas is usually a pretty boring trip. Not when you're on the way to VLV 13 with the Throttle Kings! Great people, a long string of cool hotrods, and making new friends at every stop along the way!! We managed the trip over with only one very small mishap (someone's throttle got stuck...go figure these are the Throttle Kings!) We even got to kick off our weekend party with a pit stop just past stateline -- after you're in Nevada you can crack open a beer in the parking lot with no worries. Arriving...
Exhaust 101: How-To Choose A New Exhaust System
posted by GreaseGirl
The best way I can explain what an exhaust system is to your car is its like how your car breathes. When I started driving my Studebaker three years ago, I knew the exhaust system would only be temporary. It was transplanted from a different model Studebaker and had been cut and pieced together to pseudo-fit into mine. But I just figured a pipe was a pipe and couldn't make too much difference. About six months ago the years of dragging my mufflers over any bump I passed payed off in a huge gaping hole in one of my mufflers! This is when I really began to get serious about redoing my exhaust system. Not only did the muffler have a hole, but the headers also looked like they had holes where the four tubes lead into the connector. Added to this, my header gaskets were blown, which led to more noise in an already noisy car and a general unhappiness of my engine. The problem with putting a new exhaust system onto Stude was that I didn't understand exhausts. How was I supposed to choose new headers, new...
Hot Rod Fixed- It’s about time!

You don't have to look that closely to see the dust piling up. My friends never let me forget what I already know. That ain't right. Good news is, MyRideisMe.com is growing, but it's at a cost to why I made it: The fun of driving and working on cars. No regrets, but just the same, I'm glad to have Bonnie, my 1927 Ford Roadster back on the road. So what was wrong? General laziness Get out there son! Stripped out threads for 1 header bolt I've never done a Heli-coil before Sounds even more pathetic when I write it down. Backing up some... A friend had a gift certificate for ceramic header coating that he couldn't use, so knowing I'm a fellow car dude, he offered it to me. I needed to do something! If you've been following the build/update progress of my roadster for a while, you saw this post (Click to read it): Home-built Header finish-ATF! After applying the ATF (and after the smoke cleared...) the header was an amazingly cool gray-blue. I loved it and you couldn't beat the cost! It looked pretty good for...
1320Designs – Hot Rod Concept Drawings
posted by Hechtspeed
Drawing Cars with My Buddy Joel This blog post is a long time coming. We at MyRideisMe have shown off a number of talented hot rod artists. Joel Nelson of 1320 Designs is most definitely on that list. I mean, just dig these drawings below. Asking Joel how he got into drawing cars, he said: I got into drawing cars from watching The Dukes of Hazzard on prime time and Smokey and the Bandit. Thankfully CarTOONS was in full circulation too and that really put me over the edge! Then during the late 80's and early 90's, I really got into drawing Pro Street cars. Nothing was safe from becoming "pro street-ed". You could make anything look nasty by dropping it and adding a set of big 'n' littles! I like to work with markers and pastels mostly but have been known to do hand painted work in Photoshop too. Nothing beats pencil and paper though! This first one is Joel's latest and is our own Pikesan's 1961 AMC Rambler Wagon gasser concept drawing. You'll be seeing more of this concept from Joel in the future as he fine tunes...
Exhausted! Custom Exhaust How-To
posted by GreaseGirl
When I wrote my 2010 Car Project Wish List, Get a new exhaust system on was top priority. I'm glad to report that this past week I tackled the first item on my list! I certainly can't take the credit on this one, because I had a lot of help! B&C Industries down in Anaheim put their skill and expertise to work in crafting a top quality custom exhaust system for Studebaker, along with tons of help from Matt over at Department of Customz also. As I'd previously explained Stude's exhaust: The pipes that went on my car were originally shaped for a different model Studebaker. This means I’ve got an ugly exhaust system taking a good 6” under my car’s profile – yuck! It’s also taken a good beating on the asphalt because of that, which has resulted in both mufflers been torn open! Take that and worn out Hooker headers and you’ve got crazy noise and a less-than-healthy exhaust system. "Less-than-healthy" is an understatement. We're talking nearly-unbearable noise, exhaust fumes pouring into the passenger area, and a slight embarrassment anytime I drove anywhere "car people" would be....
