Bonneville Salt Flats: Car Show or Race Car? I've been wanting to share this car with you guys for a couple months now. I originally showed some early pics I took during a tour of Salt Flats Speed Shop (that story link here). Chris Davenport, shop owner and metal craftsman, and now louver expert, is building a '32 Sedan in the traditional style from the 40's and 50's. He has put together a pretty detailed build thread on the H.A.M.B. He has been updating it pretty regularly the last couple months as he's been making some big progress. Car Art and Hot Rod Art Become Fine Art Have you ever met Tom Fritz? Chances are, you'd remember if you had. You probably noticed the dark display at one of your favorite car shows, then you were drawn in by the vivid paintings filling almost every bit of dark. I last ran into the flip-flop wearing, ultra soft-spoken Fritz at Barrett Jackson 2010. I don't know crap about art, especially fine art except for what I like, and I like what Tom's throwing down. Tom's art is all the more sweet when he takes the time to talk with you about each piece and fill you in on some of the catchy titles like: "Feeling the Belts", "Raising Merry Hell II", "Ancient Barbaric Amusements" and one of my favorites, "Quick Sombish". At the Grand National Roadster Show, one exhibition hall, #9 I think, always has a theme. Last year, it was former America's Most Beautiful Roadster winners. The hall was filled with with AMBR winning roadsters from back when the show was still in Oakland, CA. This year, the theme hall was the "History of the Race Car". I just published another story about the Drag Race cars in this hall, but this one's just about this 1969 Corvette named, "Revolution" and owned by the late Mike Mitchell. In a hall filled with wild race cars, this one, as you can see stands out. The paint is fantastic! The "Fastest Hippie" theme is carried out throughout the car with the psychedelic rainbow patterns on the side then the jumbo hookah on the hood and the zig-zag man near the cockpit. Nostalgia Drag Race History from 2010 GNRS

You can almost smell the tires burning cruising through the "History of the Race Car" hall at the 2010 Grand National Roadster Show. The exhibit, of course featured drag racer from the way-back-machine, especially my favorite: Nose in the air gassers! Getting up-close and personal with the "Outer Limits" Mopar, I'm reminded of a buddy who saw his first altered wheelbase A/FX'r and asked, "Who'd do that?!" That's exactly why I love them! Make noise, look near ridiculous and have more fun than anyone! I want one, and some day I'll get it. I might have to build my 61 Rambler American wagon as a gasser. Low-buck, fast and loud = funner-mostess. Continuing my stroll, I found the, "Fastest un-blown Ford V-8 powered dragster running in National Nostalgia Drag Racing." ...and it's driven by a woman named Kathy Lloyd out of Castro Valley, CA. According to their show card, the car was built in 1969, then restored in '85, then back-halfed in 1996, no doubt to return to racing. Safety rules have changed, juuuuussst a little since 1969. I know hot rods and customs is what brings us car guys and gals together but, its the people that make this hobby what it is. Everyone has their own story. My passion for the automobile started with my dad and uncle. They have hot rodded off and on since they were teenagers. It was their hobby, their passion. It's what kept them out of trouble when their dad passed away at the age of 15 and 12. My dad has tons of stories of his '64 Mercury Comet Cyclone on the streets of Azusa, Calif and the original Irwindale Dragstrip. My uncle has stories of tearing up GMR (Glendora Mountain Road) in his Nova and Datsun 510. Most of my close friends are there because of our common interestes in cars. My brother and I and my cousin have our own stories of cars (and motorcycles) that we have customized that we can share with our kids. It's the Hecht pasttime. The Antique Automobile Club of America or AACA museum is a perfect place to spend a couple of hours while avoiding the chill of an East Coast winter. So, on a recent trip to Hershey, PA the wife and I thought we would try and do just that. The museum is an awesome facility with a great variety of vehicles. For just $10 you can relive the great history of transportation in the 20th century. A very knowledgeable staff is always available to answer your questions as well as entertain you. You can even hold a wedding here with the museum offering many different choices of locations for your reception. How cool would that be!? The Antique Automobile Club of America’s Museum opened its doors to the public back on June 26, 2003. Since then, it has been the home to many rare and historic cars. The museum is constantly rotating its inventory to keep things interesting so you never know what you might see. Currently on exhibit, through the beginning of April, are the Camaros and Firebirds presented by Freysinger Pontiac GMC Buick. Over 20 vehicles are on display in this...

VW Beetle Road Racers

My first car was a 1972 Bug I picked up from a family friend for $500 (Check my Bug Garage here). Then I spent 2 years in Brazil as a missionary for my church. Brazil was one of the few countries that manufactured the Volkswagen Beetle. I was surrounded by them. One of the cities I lived in had a race track and they used to run Copa Fusca, which means Beetle Cup, a race class just for road racing Vdub Bugs. Some of these photos also come from the German version, the Kafer Cup series. I got to thinking and did a quick google image search. Check these Fuscas out, so rad! I dig the front airdam spoiler, extra wide fenders and wide wheels and tires. Pretty simple formula. This silver Fusca may be running a front radiator or oil cooler, not sure. Man that looks fun! Here's a German Kafer racer. Check out that big Porsche style rear wing! The little vent behind the rear window tells you its a 1972 or newer Bug. Japanese Legends...also known as JDM (Japanese Domestic Market) Machines, Japanese Nostalgic Cars, J Tin, you get the picture. Domestically here in the US of A, we have classics like the 1932 Deuce Coupe, 55-57 Chevy Bel Air, 67-69 Camaro, 64 1/2-70 Mustang, etc. In Japan, the classics are cars like the Nissan Skyline, Toyota Celica, Corolla, Datsun 510 (Bluebird in Japan) and 240Z (Fairlady Z in Japan). JDMLegends is a new shop located in North Salt Lake, Utah. They had their Grand Opening last July 2009. So bummed I missed it. Looked like a nice gathering of Japanese cars! Project 1320 – Capturing Drag Racing’s Storied Past

Keep your eyes and ears open for Project 1320 described in the press release below, you'll be glad you did. The project's goal is simple. Get the facts about the how, why and where drag racing started and how it developed over the years from a first hand perspective of the people who were there. Traci Hrudka is the chairman for this project and comes from a long line of drag racing herself. Traci's uncle Joe and father Tom Hrudka started the great Mr. Gasket empire. (Click on the picture to see them full size) Look closely at these pictures taken from Traci's page at the community she's making for Project 1320. Notice the "Hrudka Bro's" and "Mr. Gasket" proudly displayed on the side? Traci worked at the family business for 20 years and in her words, "Boy do I have some stories!" That's what this project is about. An "oral history" of everyone from the legends like Don Garlits to the no name grassroots fellas (and ladies!) that made drag racing what it is. Salt Flats Speed Shop in Orem, Utah is run by Chris Davenport, a metal fabrication and finishing craftsman and hot rod builder who is dedicated to building 1930's traditional hot rods. Chris has been in business officially for about 2 years now and is attracting more and more customers as the word gets out about his affordable, high quality craftsmanship. "Need a Chop, a roof insert, fender, or a quarter panel? Well you've come to the right place. We'll fix all your cars issues, and have it looking as good in "bare metal" as it did when it was made." Chris (in the white shirt) showing us around his shop in Orem. This is a customers 3 window coupe with suicide doors. We dropped in on Chris Thanksgiving week. He willingly took an hour or more to give us the full shop tour. He explained all his tools, showed us all his projects and talked shop. I could tell Chris is passionate about hot rods!
